Ohhh Booooo!

I got a shiny new toy recently - a belated xmas present. A cycle trip computer, which I finally got working on Monday. And today was the first ride when it was properly working*.

I have been under the apparent delusion that I was riding between 8-10 kilometres when I ride to work. I think I sort of measured it on a cycle map once. As my shiny new toy informed me this morning, it is only 7.67km. *frown*

So I don't like my new toy so much this morning.

Also, what is with just ripping up cycle paths without any warning. I know I am not on cycle blogs or anything, but I ride the work route at least once a week, and I rode it three damn days ago, and I never saw any signs suggesting they were about to rip out a bit section of the shared path through town. Also, no detour signs at all when I hit that part today. Admittedly I didn't need to ride in traffic for very long, but some of us hate riding in traffic so even that little bit was more than we are comfortable with.

It seems like every time I ride at the moment a new part of the cycle path has been ripped up, and no clear directions given. Is there some kind of text or email notification list I can get onto to warn me when part of the cycle routes have been put out of commission? I mean, you don't block off roads without notifying people in advance and giving them information as to a detour route, why should the cycle 'roads' be any different?

*I say properly, but I haven't really figured out all the settings and so on yet. So I have NO IDEA what half of the numbers it was flashing up were about.

Riding part 2

So I tried Juff's suggested alternative route home - mind you, since I had been thinking about it in terms of riding to work, hadn't really thought of how to do that in reverse - so I got a little lost initially.

I like riding up aberdeen street, with the riding shoulders ... riding lanes, whatever. And it seems it is a bit of a shorter ride - I am up to 14.4 km on my shiny toy - so shorter, and less hills. Interestingly, I was able to ride up suicide hill for the first time.

So it was a good alternative. V pleased.
