More awesome professor stuff

The Sentencing and Penology course I am doing, by it's nature deals with some pretty awful stuff. We are looking at sentencing, so we are looking at cases of all kinds of the misery people inflict on each other. And the misery that created those criminals. And so on.

First class today, and when we got to the first sexual assault case the lecturer stopped and said this to us...

"Before we start on this I want you all to remember in any group of people this large there will be people who have been sexually assaulted. I want you to keep that in mind when we discuss this issue. There is nothing I can do about that, or about the fact that we will need to look at these kinds of cases, but I just want to ensure that everyone keeps a respectful and mindful attitude when this is the subject under discussion"

Well, words to that effect anyway.

Awesome. Never heard another lecturer say anything of the kind in a class. Not once.

What a marvellous thing to do... and it shouldn't be so stand out, but it is and I can just be glad the lecturer said something. I think acknowledgement goes a long way - especially if you can't do much in the way of substantive change.
