Running with Smalls
I recently decided to try doing my running program on the days when I collect the smalls from school and run them around to after school activities. There is always some time when it is light, and there are parks, and they talk about their school cross-country running in terms of which last-place they come (a weird funhouse invertion moment of my own childhood there)so I figure they might get a bit better, and, lets face it, it might exhaust them a bit :D
So the first day I suggested this two numbers 1 and 3. "While 2 is at dance, want to come do my running program with me?" Much enthusiasm shown, and everyone raced off to get suitably clothed. Excellent. Dropped 2 at class, drove to local park.... and 1&3 raced off to the playground next to the oval I was running round. heh. So I did my warm up and half my running program, then I collected them from the playground and announced that EVERYONE was doing the last two laps. And everyone did; 3 and I did my training together, 1 wandered reeeeeally slooooowly until we lapped zer and I explained we were here til ze finished. Then ze ran the rest of the way. All good. 3 was very cheerful about the whole thing and agreed to run with me again later in the week.
so I meet them at school for the second session, and 3 says 'I don't want to run today'. And I said 'well you agreed to run with my earlier in the week, and you didn't cancel early enough for me to change my plans, and now I have no other time to run, and you have to come with me. If you want to change plans you have to do it early enough for me to change my schedule. So now you have to come." This went over better than expected actually.
We drop off 1 and 2 at their various activities and head to the oval. On the way I explained that ze couldn't just go to the playground as I would be facing away for too much of the time to feel comfortable leaving zer their alone. So ze would actually have to train with me the whole time. And we had some talks about things that ze would like to do on this day of activities as ze doesn't like the current range of options. So we worked out some options ze would like... but by the end of the training session (ze mainly kept up, pretty impressive actually - or a depressing statement of my speed and fitness actually) what ze wants to do that each week is run with me.
huh. Kids eh?
