Referendum
May. 9th, 2013 09:24 amSo we will be having a referendum at the Federal election in September. On recognition of local government.
Which is interesting. What would be the case against it?
Hmm - I occasionally get a peripheral view of some discussions the wookie has on forums about whether parking fines levied by local councils were unconstitutional. I have never heard the whole argument because I tend to stick my fingers in my ears, and rock back and forth chanting 'put down the constitution and step away. You need legal training to read it. It doesn't mean what you think it means. You have to read the cases too...' over and over until he goes away.
So, it will be interesting to see if anyone can put up a real case against recognition of local government. I hope they wait until June or July to really have this argument though (if one emerges) because I don't have time to track it until after this semester!
Oh I thought of one. State Governments have some reasons to not want them recognised actually. They can over-rule them now, and I think their funding goes via State Govts. Also, it might squash the mega-council idea. Doubt you can force council mergers if they are recognised. Can't imagine the States are planning to be anti though, it would be a crappy time to announce a referendum given everything the Feds are trying to get the States to sign up to at the moment.
Hehe - there is the law school nerd coming out!
