Also a review
Dec. 16th, 2010 09:05 pmI went to High Tea at the Peninsula Tea House today - where Tranby House is. And thought I would give it a review for others.
Firstly, I was a bit worried about going to this place, I had a hell of a time making the booking. But it seems to be the only place that does High Tea mid week, and High Tea is the thing I do with this friend when we are in the same city.
So, first thing to note - making the booking will be hell, and they require a $10 per person deposit when you make the booking. For a $30 meal I might point out.
Second thing - it is a little difficult to find. Spend the time checking it out on whereis.com first. But quite lovely on the river when you get there, and you can also do the tour of Tranby House since you are there anyway.
The place is utterly beautiful, done in what I think is a 'parisienne' style. Pretty anyway. You can sit inside or out, on couches or at tables, and they pretty much let you choose where you want to sit.
The tea set and silverware and everything is gorgeous too. Really beautiful Royal Albert China, silver teapots and sugar pots and napkin rings etc. Absolutely lovely and made me desire such beautiful tea-set too.
The tea was very nice - no enough of it and not a vary varied selection. But I had Kenilworth, which was like a lighter orange pekoe, and was really lovely.
The food was pretty good too, sandwiches, scones and cakes and petit fours. And plenty for each person. and it was all good and there was actual lashings of cream and jam. So that was all nice.
So, what is the downside? Same problem as booking, the service is awful. Really awful. As in you need to stand up and get a mexican wave going at your table to get served. We sat down and they brought out the tea set and the menus, and the only thing they had to take as our order was what tea we wanted and they took about 20 minutes to do that. Plus we couldn't get more hot water for the tea, and there really wasn't enough of it. We had booked a high chair, and they brought it out about 35 minutes after we got there, so we had already sorted the baby out ourselves.
So that was kind of a shame. I thought it was fabulous, and would have been still calling it fabulous if the service had just been minimal - if they had given us tea inside of 15 minutes, I would probably have called it great. Now I am saying that it is worth going to for the pretty things, but don't be hungry or gasping for a cuppa when you get there!
